What experiences do we already have that will help us in understanding the physics of waves?įor many people, the first thought concerning waves conjures up a picture of a wave moving across the surface of an ocean, lake, pond or other body of water. Before beginning a formal discussion of the nature of waves, it is often useful to ponder the various encounters and exposures that we have of waves. We study the physics of waves because it provides a rich glimpse into the physical world that we seek to understand and describe as students of physics. Waves (and wavelike phenomena) are everywhere!

The motion of a pendulum, the motion of a mass suspended by a spring, the motion of a child on a swing, and the "Hello, Good Morning!" wave of the hand can be thought of as wavelike phenomena. In addition to waves, there are a variety of phenomena in our physical world that resemble waves so closely that we can describe such phenomenon as being wavelike. Sound waves, visible light waves, radio waves, microwaves, water waves, sine waves, cosine waves, stadium waves, earthquake waves, waves on a string, and slinky waves and are just a few of the examples of our daily encounters with waves. Whether we recognize it or not, we encounter waves on a daily basis. Let us stand before God in awe of His greatness and majesty and trust in His love and promises.Waves are everywhere. He will call us out beyond the shore into the waves and no fear can hinder us now because of the love and promises He has made. He will draw us beyond the shore and into His grace. He is our strength and courage and will make us brave. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you he will never leave you nor forsake you.” God is with us and will never leave us nor forsake us. In Deuteronomy 31:6, God tells us, “Be strong and courageous. He will uphold us with His righteous right hand. I will strengthen you and help you I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” God is with us and will strengthen us and help us. The Bible tells us in Isaiah 41:10, “Do not fear, for I am with you do not be dismayed, for I am your God. No fear can hinder us now because of the love and promises He has made. He makes us brave and calls us out beyond the shore into the waves. He draws us beyond the shore and into His grace. God has called us by name and sings a song of love over us. He is our Champion and has made a way for us to enter into His love. We bow in humility, knowing that He is the King of Heaven and that He is for us, not against us. We stand before God in awe of His greatness and majesty.
